Bushu Privacy Policy

There is no account, no sign-in, and no server. Bushu does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal information.

No analytics SDK and no crash-reporting SDK is built into the app. That is a property of the binary rather than a setting: the dependencies are absent, so there is nothing to switch on and nothing that could be enabled by a future configuration change without a new release.

Everything. Your decks and cards, review history and scheduling state, statistics, streak, settings, and any audio or images you attach to a card are written to a database in the app's private storage and nowhere else.

Deleting the app deletes all of it. About → Reset erases it without uninstalling. Neither sends anything anywhere, and neither is recoverable, because we never receive a copy.

Bushu does not use iCloud, Google Drive, or any other sync service. It can write a backup file of your collection, on your instruction, to a location you choose; nothing is uploaded, and no copy is kept anywhere else. Deleting the app removes everything except a backup file you saved yourself.

None of them is Bushu reporting on you. Android declares the INTERNET permission for the first of them.

Downloading extra content

Settings offers optional word packs. Nothing is downloaded until you tap to install one. The request carries no identifier: it asks a static file host for a file by name, and that host sees what any web server sees - the request, and the address it came from. No account exists to attach it to, and Bushu sends no analytics with it.

Opening a link

Tapping the maker credit or a source licence on the About screen hands the address to your browser. From that moment the site you opened is subject to its own privacy policy, not this one.

Reading a card aloud

The Listen button asks your device's own text-to-speech engine to speak the text on the card. Bushu passes the text to the operating system; what happens next is your device's behaviour, not Bushu's. Some system voices run entirely on-device and some are streamed from the platform vendor, Apple or Google, depending on your phone and which voices you have installed. An offline voice can be downloaded in your device's accessibility settings, and Listen can simply be left alone.

Fonts are bundled in the app and are never fetched at runtime.

Bushu asks for a permission at the moment you use the feature that needs it, never at launch, and every one can be refused without losing anything else.

• Microphone - only while you are recording, for two features. Recording a pronunciation into a card saves it to your device as part of that card. Recording yourself in speaking practice, to compare with the system voice, makes a temporary file that is never attached to a card and is deleted when you move to the next sentence or leave the practice. It is not analysed and never leaves your device.
• Photo library - only to attach an image to a card. Bushu reads the image you pick and never writes to your library.
• Files - only to pick an image or audio file you are attaching to a card, or the backup file you are saving or restoring.
• Notifications - only if you turn on the daily study reminder in Settings. The reminder is scheduled on your device at the time you choose; no server sends it, and turning it off cancels it.

Bushu does not use the camera and does not use location. On iOS a camera usage string appears in the app because the image-picking library includes camera support; Bushu never invokes it.

Bushu is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.

Bushu ships dictionary data from JMdict/EDICT, JmdictFurigana, Kanjium, KANJIDIC2, CC-CEDICT, FrequencyWords, Unihan, the Unicode Character Database, KanjiVG, Make Me a Hanzi, and the Tatoeba Project. This is reference data included in the app, not information about you. Each source and its licence is credited in the app under About → Sources.

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. A change affecting what leaves your device would be announced in the app's release notes as well, because a policy nobody re-reads is not notice.
